when i try to start vista i get a message that says that fvevol.sys missing

I had a similar issue vvoice.sys prevented Vista from loading on my system. It resulted in a reinstall of the OS. Still, you could give Vista's recovery tools a try, boot from the DVD, choose the option to Repair and existing installation, Vista will search for it and give you a list of options to Repair, do a system restore.
